A study found that higher levels of vitamin D in the body can help prevent the development of all kinds of cancer, especially liver cancer.

Vitamin D is made by the skin with the help of sunlight. This vitamin regulates the levels of calcium in the body for healthy bones, teeth, and muscles. Not only that, vitamin D was also having other benefits, including in chronic diseases such as cancer.

The researchers found that higher vitamin D levels could reduce cancer risk by 20 percent, both in men and women. More specifically, vitamin D can reduce the risk of liver cancer by 30-50 percent where it is more proven in men.

"Higher vitamin D concentrations are associated with lower overall cancer risk," said Taiki Yamaji of the National Cancer Center in Tokyo, who supports vitamin D as having a protective effect against cancer.

The study, published on The BMJ journal, analyzed 33,736 men and women aged 40-69 years monitored for 16 years.

No association was found in the lung or prostate cancer. No cancer was detected in participants with high vitamin D levels. However, further research is needed to see the associated vitamin D levels suggested.
