The effects of vitamin B12 deficiency can make you feel tired until vision diminishes. Fatigue is one sign of vitamin B12 deficiency. That's because the body depends on vitamins to make red blood cells that carry oxygen to the organs of the body. Oxygen is not enough to cause fatigue, no matter how long you sleep.
In addition to fatigue, if the following symptoms you often experience, ask your doctor to perform a blood test.
1. Tired muscles
The muscles will become soft or weak if they do not get enough oxygen from the red blood cells. Especially tiredness continues to happen every day.
2. Confusion or forgetfulness
When you forget something, you may worry that it is early dementia. But, sometimes vitamin B12 deficiency is the cause. This can be known only through a blood test.
3. The skin looks pale
If your reddish skin is now turning yellowish, a low B12 may be the cause. Your red blood cells are very fragile and break easily when B12 deficiency. Thus, this causes the release of bilirubin pigment which gives yellow skin.
4. Smooth and red tongue
Some people with severe B12 deficiency lose papillae or small spots on the tongue, especially around the edges of the tongue. Patients also complain of burning and pain, especially in the back. Because the papilla helps to taste food or drink, many of them are experiencing weight loss because the food did not taste anymore delicious.
5. Feeling anxious or sad
Every little thing can make you cry or worry, could be a sign of vitamin B12 deficiency. Although it is not known exactly the connection, but this possibility is related to the fact that B12 is involved in the synthesis of brain chemicals, such as serotonin and dopamine that help regulate mood.
6. Eye problem
In several cases, lack of B12 can damage the optic nerve or install blood vessels in the retina that cause blurred vision, double, sensitivity to light and even loss of vision. The first symptom of retinal damage that is commonly felt is the shadow in the eye that affects the field of vision.
