Which one woman or man is stronger while exercising? The majority of people must answer men. However, that assumption is not entirely true. A new study says, the stamina of women was more fit than men.
"These findings contradict popular belief that men's bodies are more athletic," says lead author Thomas Beltrame. In the study, Beltrame and the team compared analyzing the retrieval and extraction of muscle oxygen in 18 young men and women as they worked on the treadmill. Oxygen uptake is an important measure of aerobic fitness.
The result, a team of researchers from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, concluded that women who consistently process oxygen about 30 percent faster than men.
"We found that women's muscles secrete oxygen from the blood more quickly, which, scientifically, show superior aerobic systems," says Richard Hughson, a professor at the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences at Waterloo.
Hugson, who is also an expert in vascular aging and brain health, explains, because faster oxygen processing faster, women tend to accumulate molecules associated with muscle fatigue.

Meanwhile, Beltrame added that the study could not fully explain why women's muscles absorb oxygen more quickly."Although we do not know why women have faster oxygen uptake, this study excludes conventional notions that could change the way we approach athletic assessment and exercise," Beltrame said.
