Glass Containers Safer than Plastic Containers?

One type of container that is often used to store spices is plastic. This one material is more widely found and cheaper than glass containers.

Most of these plastic containers fall into category 1 or known as Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) with clear texture characteristics. While it is safe to use repeatedly, PET can release other metallic and chemically endocrine metals into the diet.

Glass, ceramic, and stainless steel containers are safe because they can store food hot or cold without fear of chemical mixing from the container.

Other types of plastics such as number 7 that contain bad BPA can cause hormonal disorders and trigger cancer.

In addition to plastic, tin cans are also an option to save spices. This material is safe to use for packing food.

Because tin salt is less absorbed (only about 5 percent) and quickly excreted from the human body, the levels of toxicity in this material are low.

However, some salt in the lead can cause kidney damage. Therefore one way to minimize the toxicity is by coating tin using an enamel coat and using a lined cap.

Unfortunately, the new study says that tin coating may also contain BPA. Therefore, it should not store acid food in open cans to avoid tin entry into food.

Then what materials are safe to use for food containers or seasonings? Glass, ceramic, and stainless steel containers are safe because they can store food hot or cold without fear of chemical mixing from the container.
