Survey: Advertising on Television Have Effect to Consume Junk Food

Many factors that cause people to eat junk food. In addition to a good taste, advertising on television is one reason people eat fast food.

Reported by Webmd.boots.com, according to a survey conducted by Cancer Research UK, TV commercials make people add to the sense of wanting someone to consume 520 junk food and unhealthy snacks such as chips, biscuits, take away food and soft drinks in a year.

Reporting from Webmd.com mentions that eating junk food regularly with high levels of saturated fat and sugar is closely related to obesity.

There are findings in online surveys of 3,348 representatives of children aged 11-19 years on May 8 and July 8, 2016, namely:

1. Teenagers who watch commercial TV more than 3 hours a day are more likely to eat hundreds of additional junk food meals a year than those who watch fewer TVs.

2. Take away food, chips, energy drinks, and high-sugar sparkling drinks are some of the foods consumed by teenagers while watching TV with advertising.

3. In Nicky Broyd's writing "TV ads make teens crave junk food'" mentions that teenagers who regularly broadcast TV shows with advertisements are more likely to drink soft drinks and eat fast food than someone who watches streaming television that has a low enough ad count.

In addition, researchers found no relationship between the duration of the watch and the possibility of eating more fast food while watching television programs without advertising.

Health implications
Still from the same page mentioned that eating junk food regularly with high levels of saturated fat and sugar is strongly associated with obesity.

Cancer Research UK says, obesity is the second largest cause of cancer after smoking. Not only that, overweight is closely related to 13 types of cancer including breast cancer, colon cancer, and pancreatic cancer.

With such ill effects, Dr Jyotsna Vohra from Cancer Research UK requested that junk food advertisements be limited, especially during programs popular with young people, such as talent shows and soccer games.
