Understanding How Long A Newborn Baby Should Sleep

On average, newborns should have 16 hours of sleep a day. However, there are babies who need less time to sleep or more. In addition, to understand, baby sleep patterns often change from day to day.

Babies may sleep much less than usual one day and then "reciprocate" by sleeping more the next day. David S. Geller, M.D, a pediatrician in Bedford, Massachusetts, USA, in an article on the Babycenter.com page outlines his views on this subject.

According to Geller, let newborns sleep as much as he likes, as long as he's awake to eat, and drench at least eight diapers a day. Also, let him sleep as little as he wants, as long as he does not become visibly tired.

Geller says, in the first months after birth, we will generally find babies spending their days sleeping. Babies only wake up when hungry, and then fall back asleep after they are full.

He said, this pattern will change over the first few months, because gradually the baby will spend more time awake.
